TILT Brass Bio
New York-based organization TILT Brass is an artist-run collective comprised of creative brass and percussion musicians. Since 2003, TILT has commissioned and presented instrumental works by over 40 composers, including group members, peers, and legacy masters. Led by composer, curator, and trombonist Chris McIntyre (Ne(x)tworks, MATA Festival), TILT concerts feature its two ensemble projects: the 10-piece orchestra Creative Brass Band (TCBB), and SIXtet, a 6-piece "triple duo" of trumpets, trombones, and tubas. A number of vital New York venues have presented TILT projects including Whitney Museum, ISSUE Project Room, and The Stone. Many of the nearly 20 original works in TILT's repertoire embrace the playerly, composed/improvised hybrid aesthetic developed in Downtown New York over the past 40 years. The musicians of TILT are direct descendants of this "local" tradition, continuing to evolve and mutate its musical DNA from within. TILT Brass projects often present thematic concert programs, such as the on-going series' New York Noise (historical and current works by important composers from the Downtown community) and To TILT: Original Music for TILT Brass. Its collective repertoire list includes works by legends such as Anthony Coleman (released on Tzadik), Lois V. Vierk, Nick Didkovsky, and John King, mid-career peers like Chris Jonas and Taylor Ho Bynum, and TILT composer members Kevin Norton, Nate Wooley, and Curtis Hasselbring. Recordings of all 12 of TCBB's To TILT works will be released during the Fall of 2010, with a SIXtet release to follow in early 2011.
