Born and raised in Santa Barbara, CA, trombonist/multi-instrumentalist and visual artist Ben Gerstein has been living in New York City since 1995, a jazz graduate from the Manhattan School of Music in 1999. Over the years he has developed a wide variety of groups and projects committed to exploring free-improvisation as the means to composition and integration with nature and the arts. He has also recorded numerous recreations of works for himself by composers such as Conlon Nancarrow, Sholom Aleichem, Elliott Carter, Igor Stravinsky, J.S. Bach and Carlo Gesualdo. Ben has been a member of ensembles led by the likes of Henry Threadgill, Joe and Mat Maneri, Tony Malaby and Tyshawn Sorey, among many others.
